  • Naked & Truthful

Many aspects & issues we take for granted here, still seem to pose a challenge to gay men in India. This reality is driven home honestly & emotionally in Rangayan's 'Yours Emotionally' has an universal appeal. The film purports to "explore cultural differences & similarities" between a British Asian from Leicester and a youth from rural India. And it does so vividly, passionately & quite emphatically. But the film doesn't stop there. Its highlight is the 'trans-generational' plot line where we get to see gay men in their 20s as well as a gay couple in their 50s. Stories & images such as these are hard to find, even in the mushroom of American gay films that focus more on hot bodies & the eternal fountain of youth. Through some exquisite color tones & angles, a mood is set that exploits the mental states of all the characters aptly. A dramatic scene between the two boys and the only woman we see on screen (fiance of the village youth) uses extremely vivid compositions and dramatic jump cuts to show changing dynamics of the triangle. Brilliant and truly of international cinematic quality. A daring effort that may be difficult for some dogmatic people, was very well received by the New York audiences with lots of laughter and a huge ovation at the end. Wonder how the director would be able to screen such a nakedly truthful film in his homophobic country and more importantly how it will be received. A groundbreaking film.

  • feeds stereotypes that are already prevalent

It seems to me a big big big disservice to the gay community. there was no characterisation bestowed besides the fact that they were all-time-horny men."the rule is that you must try out with everyone". still, most of the sex seemed added on, merely to titillate. i wish the politics of homosexual relationship was handled a little more sensitively. The inter relationships seemed very shallow. As if everyone's basically digging into everyone else without the least bit of emotional tug. The subtlest suggestions were innuendos such as "wher are u/ behind you" or a bulb dangling in the frame, or close shot of frothy hosepipe shooting off, a canon or very clichéd humor such as "are you coming Paul/ aah aah yes" The film however has been reviewed as being "hauntingly beautiful". Maybe the spooky editing is being referred to. The editing is interesting, people disappear.Nice effect. Very engaging. The colors did not add to the "surreal" effect as has been reviewed.

  • An absolutely intolerable mess

This film is about the encounters of two British guys, one Caucasian and the other of Indian heritage, after attending a gay party in India. "Yours Emotionally" is badly made across the board. The plot is terrible, it often states the obvious as if talking to a three year old. A lot of lines are ridiculously bad that made me laugh. Acting is almost non existent, but I am not surprised as this is an ultra low budget production. Most of the time, the post production is appalling. I don't know why the director thinks it is a good idea to have one second pauses or a ghost effect every now and then, as it is annoying and pointless. Moreover, most of the scenes are either too yellow or blue, which hurts my eyes as the end result is far too unnatural. There are a lot of self indulgent artistic scenes (which are not really artistic), and if these are cut, then the film would have been of a more tolerable length. The ending is probably supposed to be tear jerking, but unfortunately it comes out really bad. It feels like a propaganda on how tolerant and accepting Britain is, while India is not. This film is an absolutely intolerable mess.
