The Chemist (2016) Reviews

  • A B movies B movie.

I was astounded to see this movie has received awards for action scenes (amongst others) I can only assume from the same website I got my degree and title (sir Clevertimfish). The acting was OK it was the screenplay and poor choreography that let it down, imagine the b*stard child of every John Claude Van Damme film and every Assassin film you've ever seen and you have assassin x. Frankly a grueling watch and my standards are low, I love a good action flick, even a bad action flick....but this.... Not recommended unless you need a slightly jarring soundtrack to practice poking your own eyes to.

  • Target for elimination

Ronus Steele (Olivier Gruner) is a paid assassin who gets his "hits" sent to him on his tablet. Apparently there is enough people who need killing in one town to keep him busy as he has to take on a "psycho" apprentice (Steven Dell) who has a girlfriend (Nina Bergman) turned on by killing. Ronus uses chemicals to kill his victims (I liked the working title "The Chemist" better) but there is also a lot of hand to hand fighting as well as a cat fight. Ronus has little personality unlike his apprentice Blaine. The plot takes a twist, not too complicated, even Seagal fans should be able to follow it. Nothing overly special. Decent soundtrack and fight sequences. Swearing, sex, and nudity (Nina Bergman)

  • Got better as it went along

Assassin Ronus Steele (Oliver Gruner) - aka The Chemist - uses poison to terminate his targets. He refuses to terminate a very pretty Gabriela (Stephanie Gerard) who he has fallen for. What to do? What to do? Ronus is ordered to take on Blaine (Stephen Dell) a young assassin who needs to lose his loose-canon ways. This movie became better when Ronus meets Gabriela as the photography and dialogues made more sense then, and we had opportunity to understand what was going on. Prior to that meeting we got a jumble of flashbacks, confusing choreography, a jumpy camera and dialogues we couldn't make out. The beginning of this movie was a mess to put it bluntly and we had no idea what was going on with these numerous flashbacks, who the hero was (we didn't know about Oliver Gruner), and many darkened scenes that assumed we knew what this was all about. We had no clue. We were waiting for Ronus' rules for an assassin to live by and we were not disappointed as he gave them to Blaine. I just love it when an assassin gives out these rules and we usually find out he cannot live up to them as the story continues. But not in here. Not this time. Ronus lives by these rules and doesn't violate them. Blaine picks up Trinidad (Nina Bergman) who is most enamored with Blaine being an assassin and even goes on missions with him. What's not to like? (Yeah, she's a keeper) There is pretty good action choreography later on, and there is a twist I am sure most of us saw coming. We were afraid of this twist and were hoping we were wrong. But we were not wrong. (Bummer) I was not familiar with Oliver Gruner and I am sure we will see him in other Action-Hero type movies as he did a great job. (5/10) Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: No.

  • Worst "acting" I've ever had to suffer through watching

    mikemaxm2017-04-12

I honestly try to find the good in smaller budget action flicks like this, but this movie was SO BAD it was truly unwatchable. I agree with whoever commented above; the worst thing about the movie was the abysmally poor acting- especially the terrible performances by "actors" Steven Dell (Blaine) and Stephanie Gerard. I don't know if they are relatives of the producer or how in the world they convinced anyone to allow them to be on screen, much less paid to act? I mean the acting is so bad I could smell the stink through the screen. Dell seemed to just rely on flexing muscles and continuously looked lost and confused the entire time he was on screen. He was so ridiculous that it was distracting; while Nina Bergman (Trinidad) was over eager and theatrical- and almost as silly to watch. No reasonable effort was put into making a coherent story line or good camera work. And even less effort was put into bringing the characters to life. It seemed more like a group of adults playing an awkward game of dress up and make believe. These people should not be making movies they clearly have zero background in acting, nor any talent as actors. Action sequences were unrealistic, over-acted, dark and even hard to see (I mean physically see lol. Poor camera work) Plot "twists" were predictable and boring. This performance is the type where you feel insulted as an audience that people are trying to pass this off as a movie just to make a buck off you. I agree with the post above- no idea who is giving art Camacho money to make movies but pouring it into a lackluster script like this and into ridiculous actors like these is really wasteful. How wonderful if instead that money Was just given towards the arts for kids in underprivileged areas, or really to any cause other than this train wreck of a movie.

  • Review for Assassin x aka The Chemist

    geeklegionofdoom2016-07-25

Lackluster action movie with terrible direction. The overuse of slow mo, poor editing, flash backs you don't realize are flashbacks. Horrible acting , the female lead really hams it up in the face acting department . Gruner looks like he is sleep walking . However Patrick Kilpatrick makes for a good villain. Fight choreography is for the most part quite flat. A couple of OK if generic plot ideas and Kilpatrick's villain can't save it. For some reason it has a few seconds of pointless cameos in it for a seemingly unrelated scene. Overall it does have some so bad it's funny moments, but is completely forgettable 3/10
