Worth the watching!
For those of you who are familiar with Chinese horror stories, you will no doubt already know that sometimes they hit the story right on the head. This is one of those. The plot is based on your basic angry ghost seeking revenge story. There are a few truely scary moments, but for the most part it is more a mystery story about the mysterious deaths of a group of people who have recently attempted to contact spirits. These people begin to get scared to death and commit suicide (and murder) while under the possesion of a "wicked Ghost". I wouldn't hunt thus movie down to own it, but if you should pass it as a good price, I believe it is worth the watching.
Not a Horror, But a Comedy
I bought this movie because the cover looked pretty scary. The worse thing is that the cover is the only thing scary about this movie... This movie has everything you expect from a bad horror movie: 1) Weak Plot The whole movie is about our hero's journey to find out the cause of the haunting. Unfortunately, none of it is making much sense to the point of lunacy. 2) Weak visual/audio impact This is definitely not a psychological horror. It relies strictly on audio/visual impact to make you scare. Unfortunately, it is not really working. And what's with the long hair? Would movie please stop copying from the Ring already??? The face of the ghost, when they eventually show it, actually makes me want to laugh - that's how bad it is. 3) Weak acting The whole irony of this is that Teacher Mo is supposed to be a drama instructor teaching how to act... I guess to talk is one thing, to do is another. 4) Cheap set This whole thing feels like a home-made movie. I can certainly imagine my friends and I get together and produce something like this in a month. The only saving grace may be the good looking Cissy... And no, there is no gratuitous naked scene that you will otherwise find in other cheap horror movie in the same class.
The English title does not do it justice
The original name of the movie in Chinese means "old corpse in an old village". Hearing it, I imagine a repulsive rotten foul-smelly creepy dead body, not a "wicked ghost" the English title suggests. Nevertheless, the ghost figure on the poster is unsettling. The movie's plot is surprisingly good. The hero, or at least the character set up to be the hero, does not make it in the end. It is also good to see the mystery of the spirit unfold as the hero searches for a way to save his friends. It was only later in the movie that the curse was linked to drinking water. It way surpasses any ghost movie made in Mainland China, where there are no real ghost movies. PS: This is an old movie from the late 1990s, and I identified the impact of The Ring on it, namely, the teasing scene of a cursed videotape, a prank a guy played on his girlfriend.
Take it as a mystery film rather than a horror film and you'll have yourself a pretty good time.
I picked this up despite the stupid picture on the DVD case and boy am I glad. Five friends are hanging out when they decide to drink each others blood so they can commune with each other. One declines but the others do drink the blood.(Trust me its not as stupid as it sounds). Immediately after that they begin to see ghosts, the problem is that they are far from friendly. As the friends begin to die, the one who didn't drink the blood desperately attempts to find away to keep the survivors safe. Super little thriller plays more like a murder mystery with ghosts then a fright film. The problem is that the DVD cover and the title promise a different sort of film then what you get. This is ultimately a supernatural mystery with a few token scares. I like that there's logic and reason, with in context, for what is going on, and its a great deal of fun watching it all transpire. The effects are good, the actors and their characters are great. I loved this film a great deal. Its not the be all and end all of Asian horror films, but its a damn fine example of what you get when they work. How much did I like it? I think its going to go on my list of pleasant surprises for the year and I picked up a copy for the son of a co-worker who loves horror films. 7.5 out of 8
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE
I agree with the previous comment. I bought it because of the cover too! This is just as cheap and dumb as horror can get. It was probably shot in one week and edited during the following two days. Just a terrible attempt to make some cash out of the Ring phenomenon. Guessed it worked on me...'cause I bought this stupid DVD! Probably the worst movie in my over 200 DVD collection.
