Ronnie & Julie (1997) Reviews
FANTASTIC!
I give this movie a 10. Unfortunately, I lost my last post so this will have to do. It has a great script, and is very well acted. Joshua Jackson is awesome (he makes the film) as is his chemistry w/ Margot Finley. All the actors are very good. The dialogue is believable as are the characters. It's a great update of Romeo and Juliet, set in High School. The skating aspect ties it together well (RECOMENDED FOR hockey players/figure skaters). You can't help but love this sweet, romantic movie- it's not too sappy. (As if you need more convincing, JOSH JACKSON IS SOOOOO HOT!!!) I recommend this to anyone, you can see it on Showtime in the winter. It's sure to make you smile!
Shakespeare's best tragedy as a romantic comedy?
Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life; Do with their death, bury their parents' strife. For hundreds of years, one of the world's best-loved romantic stories starts with these words. I have seen many retellings of this classic tale, some with Sharks and Jets, some with police choppers and TV anchorwomen, and even a NY stage version where both the leads were both boys, but never one where the lovers lived, until now. For those that have never seen Romeo and Juliet, Ronnie and Julie may be a fair to middling romance but for anyone familiar with the story, the survival of this pair somehow robs the story of its power. If you have never seen another version of this story, by all means checks out this film, THEN see one of the more faithful versions. (I prefer Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 Romeo and Juliet) If you see another first, this film will lose most of its appeal.
Shakespeare at his best!!!!
This is an extremely under-rated masterpiece. It is because of this movie I wanted to learn more about Shakespeare and Romeo & Juliet. It's funny and incredibly romantic.Romeo (Josh Jackson) instead of being sad, dark, and frankly depressing; he is a witty, sweet, HOT, hokey player. Also Juliet (Margo Finley)is a cute also sweet figure skater.I completely fell in love with this movie ever since I first saw it. And girls who have even only heard of Josh Jackson, this movie will make you want to marry him and have 1000 of his babys.I pray that this comes on again so those who have not had the honor of seeing this classic will and love it to no end. Yes, this is definatly Shakespeare at his best.
Even an old classic has to evolve
The idea is not to get side tracked by indifferent reviews. A review needs to be truthful and not a journey to the past epitomizing the original, then it does not do justice to a work of art. Ronnie and Julie is a version using the Old Master's plot, but departing from the tragedy to the happy ending. That is what Dream Merchants are for. All in all, very enjoyable
Great movie!
I rarely ever write reviews for movies but I feel this movie deserves a review. I love this movie, it is such a great movie. SO romantic and no, I don't mean in a teenage sort of way. Anyone at any age would find this movie romantic. Julie (Margot Finley) is so beautiful in the movie and Ronnie (Joshua Jackson) is so adorable. Willa (Alexandra Purvis) is sooo cute in this movie. She steals the show in every scene she is in and she reminds so much of my cousin who is younger then me. I love the whole figure skating part of the movie. The hockey playing part was okay, I don't particularly care for hockey, but it was alright. My favourite scene in particular was the scene when Ronnie and Julie were kissing in the snow. One of the highlights of the movie was the song. "Something Happened to My Heart." It was one of the most beautiful romantic ballads I've ever heard. I don't understand why the singers of the song didn't become more famous. Maybe they were contracted to do the song for the movie and that was it. In any case, this is a wonderful movie, no violence, sex or anything offensive. You can watch it with the whole family. I highly recommend it. I give it 10/10.
