Frybread is a staple of indigenous cuisines, including native American cuisines. The winner will receive not only bragging rights as to making the best frybread in the state, but will receive $10,000 and will represent the Chapter at the national championship in New York City. There are twenty-two contestants, one representing each of the federally recognized tribal reserves or nations in Arizona. The types of frybread are as diverse as the Arizona contestants in this inaugural year. That disparate group of contestants includes: Buddy ...

  • Not Just For Native Americans

I saw this movie at a special showing at Utah Valley University. The program plays like a documentary, even the organization which the story revolves around, WWFA (World Wide Frybread Association) looks and sounds like the real deal, however the entire motion picture is scripted and comes from the mind of the writer/director Travis Holt Hamilton. The mostly Native American audience howled with laughter as the events of this 'mockumentary' unfolded. I thought this was due to the fact that it was a film about other Indians however, I have to admit after a few minutes I was also captured and drawn in to the story by the quirky characters and found myself laughing along with everyone in the room. The story follows five frybread experts from various Native Tribes in Arizona as they compete for the state championship. They are all funny, well developed characters, each actor playing their part to the max. I was impressed with all of the central actors and was amazed to learn that, for many of them, this was their first feature film performance. The director did an excellent job pulling out great performances from the entire cast. "More Than Frybread", like many other films shown at festivals or in special showings sponsored by university clubs, has a low budget. I like watching show like this to see what up and coming filmmakers can do with small budgets. I've found that they have to be more creative and better story tellers than 'Hollywood' with it's mega-budgets, big name stars and flashy computer graphics. "More Than Frybread" doesn't disappoint, it's fun, family friendly and delivers a nice message without being 'in your face'.

  • A mock fry bread competition delights!

The giggle factor in this film is huge. By the time I left the theater my jaw hurt from laughing so much. This tongue in cheek look at an Arizona Fry Bread Competition gently mocks Native American stereotypes. The cast of Arizona actors(most of them Native American) was excellent. Each character was fully developed and watching the story of the competition unfold was quite entertaining. The director clearly had a handle on what he wanted to say...and he says it in a gentle way.The surprise ending takes us to a place where we do ponder a darker side of the human spirit.Even though some of these characters are arrogant, full of themselves, ridiculous and pompous, they are all likable because this director knew how to cast. Good show!

  • I Laughed Along With the Natives

This movie is about a fictitious fry bread competition in Flagstaff, Arizona. Representatives from the many Arizona Native American tribes travel to Flagstaff for this first annual State of Arizona Frybread Competition. It is in the form of a documentary and we get to meet the contestants in their native lands before the competition. The story follows five of the 22 entrants and we get to know them and root for them when they get to Flagstaff. The movie is not technically a slapstick comedy but it is humorous and a little crazy. The actors do a great job and they play their characters so well you almost wonder if it's not a real competition and they are not actors at all. I watched this movie with my family in a theater only 15 miles from the Apache Reservation. Almost everyone in the theater was Native American, we are not. They laughed at the parts we laughed at and then some. I guess there is humor that only they can understand. They seemed to enjoy the playful rivalry between the tribes. All in all it was an enjoyable movie. If you live in Arizona around any of the Indian Reservations, you will enjoy this movie as the Indians say and do very typical or even stereotypical things.

  • Highly Educational in a very Entertaining way!

This movie answers the age-old question, "what the heck is fry bread" in a very entertaining way, which I'm very thankful for and excited about. No matter where I go in America if I tell people about fry bread, so many people ask me that. And of course if you already know what the heck fry bread is you will love this movie on so many additional levels. Travis is spinning off a TV pilot of the same thing as we speak. It will simply be called "Frybread." And it is also a comedy. I'm not sure yet if it'll be mockumentary in nature too or not. Enjoy this movie if you can. You'll thank me later!

  • Had me Going!

This jumped onto my screen about 3 minutes into it; didn't know it was a movie and thought we had stumbled upon a 'real' contest. Kept watching in disbelief, yet learning of a new pride in Arizona's fry bread communities. As it continued, it felt more and more weird and wonderment sat in. Not wanting to laugh, as we still thought it was 'real', it was astonishing in areas, to say the least. Not until the final 5 minutes when the actual fry-fight started were we fully aware we were watching a spoof/mockumentary...and could burst out in laughter. (Earlier it might have been rude or politically incorrect). To say the least, one of the best spoofs ever.... but made so much more by our method of encounter. What a hoot and holler.. Enjoy to the max!
