Hunter (2018) Reviews

  • Great gritty thriller. Hoping for a franchise

In the past years, there's been a rise of indie horror flicks impacting the movie business with their visceral violence, gritty imagery and unapologetic social commentary. Hunter, directed by David Tarleton and written by the movie protagonist Jason Kellerman is no exception. This indie gem follow the life of title character Hunter, a former cage fighter who's homeless in the cold streets of Chicago after the murder of his family by the hands of some supernatural group of killers. Since the start, we're up for a horrific thrill ride. The movie kicks off with Hunter participating in cage fights. The action is kinetic yet the audience can tell any hard hitting blow in the short fights. An example of the great craftsmanship by the filmmaker right at the start of the movie. Same can be seen in Hunter's flashback, everything is fast paced yet crystal clear and the images evokes a wide range of emotions and sympathy for the title character. I should've wanted a bit more of character development by the supporting characters, specially Danni, the love interest who shows kindness to the hopeless lead and Volakas, played by Nick Searcy (The Fugitive, The Shape of Water). No matter its minor flaws. This is a very fun thriller with love story elements that keeps the audience compelled by the mystery behind the main character's emotional issues and the truth behind his family's murder. Be sure to support this award winning independent production and watch it on Amazon.

  • Not Your Average Vampire Flick

Strong acting and a great story. Excellent cinematography. Really shows off Chicago at its finest and in its underbelly of despair. It is a love story, a horror flick, and a story of revenge. Newcomer Jason Kellerman and his leading lady Rachel Cerza are well cast as the unrequited lovers seeking to find common ground and avenge their parents' untimely loss. Great showcase of the Windy City.

  • Makings of a Cult Classic

I'm not usually a horror fan, but if you put a splash of romance, a crap ton of action and an unbelievably poignant score together- I'm totally sold. That was some of the best original composing I think I've ever thoughtfully noticed in a film- definitely the highlight for me. Highly recommended and I'll definitely watch again! Plus, Nick Searcy's accent is everything.
