Futago (2005) Reviews

  • Effective ghost story worth seeing

Futago is a morbid little gem I discovered during a recent foray into NYC's Chinatown.. and I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Lushly photographed, brooding and haunting... this is a Chinese ghost story with a Japanese twist. It's slow, moody, and is prone to suddenly going right over the top... only a few gaps in plot stopped me from giving the 10 rating. And not one ghost girl with matted long black hair covering her face! I really enjoyed the characters and actors, especially the tormented cop and the hunky (often shirtless) gang member who is at the core of the film's mystery. Hisako Shirata is fine as the haunting twin sister from Japan. Not sure how a fine film like this escaped some kind of release here in the US. See this one.

  • Beautiful Vengeance!

A beautiful woman wreaks havoc on the occupants of a hotel. I liked this film. It wasn't great, but it kept my interest. Most of the credit goes to Hisako Shirata, the ghostly beauty. There were a couple scenes that were down-right chilling. What really hurt the film was too many undeveloped sub-plots. A detective coping with suicidal tendencies, marital problems, and the recent death of a partner... An actress-turned prostitute/mother/alcoholic... I'm a firm believer in "if you're gonna' do sub-plots then develop them." However, all in all, it wasn't half-bad.

  • Nothing Special

    The_Secret_Skull2006-02-24

Futago ("Twin") has a good atmosphere, but it's a very simple supernatural revenge tale, and not much else. The characters are fine, and the guilt-ridden police detective who's contemplating a crime of his own is a nice attempt at a subplot, but there's just not enough story here to carry a 90-minute movie. Dialog is effectively sparse, and the director does a good job using visuals to move the story along (though often to the point of exaggeration). However, there are no surprises, no impressive ideas or effects, and no real reason to go out of your way to see this.
