Existence (2012) Reviews

  • So much potential but never quite got there

    kaydorsett2018-06-16

This was one of those movies that had so much potential but never quite got there. It created an interesting world, but left so many holes in why the world was the way it was, that it left the viewers unfulfilled in the end. What was on the other side of the fence? Why did she run from it? Why did the grandfather not say on the other side? And so many more . . . . Basically, no resolution at all.

  • It shouldn't exsist

Utter melodramatic crap. I gave it one star because it finally ended.

  • Lacks

I can abide a film that doesn't provide background to futuristic possibilities (how did they get to this life?) but to deny the crux of the story and leave it to the reader/watcher to figure it out is anti-climatic and leaves me thinking the writer(s) could't figure it out themselves. "I guess she saw this -or maybe that" isn't a game I personally want to play. But it did hold my attention and for that, I rate as I did.

  • The Kiwi post-apocalypse

    Leofwine_draca2018-03-26

EXISTENCE is a post-apocalypse drama from New Zealand. It has a fine evocation of a barren and desolate landscape crafted on an indie budget but other than that there's little story or reason to keep engaged with the narrative. Fine use is made of the Kiwi countryside and the camerawork is okay, but there's no drama or suspense here. The picture really needs more oomph and liveliness.

  • A haunting beautiful but simple score supports a bleak existence.

    frey_greymoor2018-04-11

I thank prime for every so often allowing me to stumble a cross these films so often hidden in a sea of vanity projects. Existence is a low budget film, but in its tiny setting and sparsely populated world, this does it more justice than disservice. Some might say that the story is one without destination, that the character's lack much, if any explanation, but again this showing, rather than telling approach leaves so much more open. The music score is minimal, but hauntingly beautiful, and sound is used again and again to display the unknown. Very little is explained in this film; much of the story is shown though actions and interactions, and answers are lacking, forcing the viewer to judge for themselves, or just to question. I would strongly recommend this film to anyone who wants a break from railroad narrative and just wants to sit back and watch something beautiful, if not stark.
