Dead Right (1993) Reviews

  • Edgar Wright had it since the beginning, a highly fun to watch movie.

Yes its amateurish and very low budget with not so great acting BUT (i have to write a big one) the movie is very good despite all of that. Edgar Wright made this movie when he was 18 years old. As a student i saw a lot off movies made by young directors and none off them was great as this one. Dead Right script have a great plot focused on details. In every scene something new and fresh is happening - you will never get bored. Back then Edgar Wright had the talent but didn't have the budget. If you are a fan of his work i strongly recommend you to watch his beginning.

  • Dead wrong, only the filmmaker's age is a bit of an excuse

"Dead Right" is a British 39-minute live action short film from 1993, so this one has its 25th anniversary next year. It was written and directed by Edgar Wright, a filmmaker who is fairly famous these days, and he was only at the tender age of 18 back then when he made this one, the first work of his career. The consequences aren't positive at all. The production values are truly low, plot and story are embarrassingly bad and the acting is also a mess. I am fairly certain many cast members here never acted in a movie before or after this one and it is somewhat fitting that those two who play the biggest roles showed up in another Wright movie not much later, then disappeared from the acting branch. This film cannot be taken seriously as a drama or crime movie. The only approach really is to see it as a comedy and it has a guilty pleasure moment here and there when it goes especially over the top. But it's not really a funny movie either. The limitations of those working on it behind and in front of the camera were just too significant. I cannot say to which extent Wright has improved as I have not seen his most famous stuff (yet), but I am sure he has because it is really not difficult to get out something better than this one here. It is really only somewhat known because of the big name attached to it. Otherwise it would be entirely forgotten. And right fully so. Stay far far away from this one.
