Bulgarian Rhapsody (2014) Reviews
An attractive blend of basically true stories
In Bulgarian Rhapsody, we meet a manic pixie dream girl whose hobby is geography. To her, geography is an escape into fantasy; but ironically the lines on the globe prove all too real because-- this being Bulgaria during World War II-- the Jews in the older areas of Bulgaria are destined to live while those in newly annexed areas are destined to die. The movie is adapted from the reminiscences of several Bulgarian survivors, and it is a "rhapsody" in that, as the dictionary says, it "is meant to express a lot of emotion and does not have a regular form." The stories blend into each other in kind of an irregular fashion, but they occupy a firm and engrossing framework of time and place.
Very good for Bulgarian movie
I watched the movie last night, as a part of a movie festival here in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The movie is good (for Bulgarian movie) and i actually liked it. They are two plot lines - from one side the dramatic historical facts about the Bulgarian citizens from Jewish backgrounds during the World War II and from other side it is a sweet love story ..... or actually a couple of them. The quantity of drama is significant, but there are also some funny moments about typical Bulgarian manner of living. On some places the script is a bit too colorful and some of the scenes are overacted. The acting game is very good. The roles are given to some of the best Bulgarian actors, so it couldn't be otherwise.
unique pleasure
A tender and beautiful love story set in times of fascist plague. The three youngsters are remarkably true and disarmingly charming. The acting of the young actress is very true and powerful. The two young actors are equally tenaciously sensitive and marvelously convincing. The trio in love is the leading tune of this tender story set in the bloodshed and war horror of WWII. And probably after more than 70 years from the historic events( part of the "frame " ) of Bulgarian PHAPSODY this is the only possible way to recall history with the little tales of the people who were the unfortunate suffering punished to live at this period.
