A psychological crime drama based on actual events of the not-too-distant past. A group of university students thought it would be entertaining to abduct girls and gang rape them. Out of fear, none of the victims talked. A female student, however, didn't want to remain silent. The kidnappers drew lots to decide which of them would become a murderer. At dawn they dragged the girl (Barbora Seidlová) off to a lake and drowned her. They terrified the witnesses and severed all contact among themselves. It took the police several years to find the necessary clues. In the meantime, some of the perpetrators began raising families, even became model citizens. Their parents used every means possible to fight the evidence, heedless of the victims' suffering, motivated only by the need to save their children, their reputations, their position in society.

Bolero (2004) Reviews

  • Excellent criminal story

    eurik-12005-01-16

Based on real event, Bolero is an excellent story of progressive recovery of a crime. The story surprises all the time, shows new connections, new possibilities, exposes new ideas and facts. It's possible to understand the film on more levels. It describes the position and all the feelings of victim's family, the police work as well as the impact of the crime on it's malefactors. It also touches the topic of moral decay of the descendants of rich, high-posted families. In addition to this, the power of the storyline is accentuated by the quality of the artistic treatment of the whole piece. Bolero is definitely something worth seeing if you don't need shooting, killing, running, fighting, explosions and exaggerated, unreal situations to enjoy a movie. Note: However, I don't recommend this movie to children.

  • Vastly underrated

The first time I saw the movie I simply could not follow it. It is a Czech language one and no English language dubbed version was available. It is not an action movie so it would be impossible to follow from the visuals alone. I searched for subtitles for it and finally found them on a obscure web site. Just to understand it I ripped the CD & incorporated the subtitles. Even than I had to pause intermittently to be able to read the subtitle text. I guess the Czech language is more efficient than English. My entire perception changed. It is an excellent movie, very well made. I somehow have a feeling that the majority of the voters could not follow it due to language problem. Very definitely worth seeing. Far better than any of those Hollywood churns out that depend on foul language, unnecessary and importantly unbelievable action, unrelated female nudity.

  • Great crime-drama

A woman is savagely raped and murdered. Several years later the police start to put together the clues and make progress on the case. Great crime-drama - the methodical investigation is great to watch. Not just a crime drama, an indictment on the state of society.
